Domaine Donatsch’s Unique Chardonnay Malans 2024 was named among the Top 10 Greatest Chardonnays of the World. LWF’s third Icon Tasting: The Greatest Chardonnay Showdown was organised by Sarah Abbott MW and Ronan Sayburn MS. Billed as a benchmark assessment of Chardonnay from classic and emerging regions, the tasting brought together 30 selected wines from across the world. They were judged double-blind by 18 leading wine professionals, including Jancis Robinson MW OBE, Dawn Davies MW and Switzerland-based consulting sommelier Tony Lécuroux MS.

For Switzerland, the result is more than a single producer’s success. It places a Swiss Chardonnay in the company of some of the world’s most recognised names, from Burgundy and Champagne to Tasmania, Margaret River, Central Otago and Umbria. Swiss wine is no longer simply “good for Switzerland”; it is increasingly being recognised in a global context.
For Martin Donatsch, the honour carries deep personal meaning. The 2024 vintage was dedicated to his father, Thomas, who passed away that year. “My dad always used to say that with Pinot Noir we’re catching up with the Burgundians, but with Chardonnay we’ll never get there,” says Donatsch. “So I’m all the more proud that today, alongside Pinot Noir, we’re also being recognised for our Chardonnay. My dad would certainly be proud of that.”

It follows another poignant milestone for Donatsch. His 2021 vintage, dedicated to his late mother, became the first and only Swiss wine to receive 100 points from Falstaff. “To me, it has always been the greatest white wine I have ever made,” he shares. “The fact that we have now received such a prestigious award with the 2024 vintage is fantastic.”
The wider message is that Swiss wine has the terroir, precision and expertise to stand beside the world’s most celebrated regions. As Donatsch puts it: “This recognition for Swiss wine is long overdue. We produce world-class wines in every part of the country. It’s just that nobody knows about them. We Swiss should be proud of our wines and share them with the world.”
Following the stellar result for Swiss rosé at this year’s Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in Calabria, this latest accolade adds further momentum to Swiss wine’s global story.
